This scrumptious Sourdough French Toast recipe holds a special place in my heart, which is why I am sharing it as one of my first recipes on the blog. We were recently evacuated because of the California fires and it was scary to say the least. I usually don’t fall prey to β€œit won’t happen to me”, but when it came to the thought of my beloved town and adjacent towns burning, it was just thatβ€”that will never happen to us. Well, thousands of acres burned, but thankfully our family homes are okay. But almost a thousand homes were destroyed in the CZU Lightning Wildfire, and so many lives have been turned upside down. So sad.

What does this have to do with French Toast you may ask? Well, during one of the mornings of evacuation, I came down the stairs with my three-year-old and baby in tow to find the smell of Sourdough French Toast filling the air. I had woke up that morning feeling down knowing a few beloved placesβ€”like our family Christmas tree farm, and the camp where I first found my faithβ€”had burned in the fires. It was a beautiful moment that brought normalcy in the midst of so much uncertainty and pain. But that is exactly what food does, and the reason I’m sharing this recipe. Food brings people together no matter the dire circumstances. I hope you enjoy this recipe and that it gives you the same good feeling. Enjoy!

Sliced Sourdough French Toast

Prep time: 15 MinCook time: 10 MinTotal time: 25 Min

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • Small pinch of nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 4 slices of round loaf sourdough cut in half to make 8 slices. *See note about bread.
  • 4-6 tbsp salted butter
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
Optional Toppings
  • Fresh berries
  • Sliced bananas
  • Powdered sugar

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl mix the cinnamon, nutmeg and sugar. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl briefly whisk together the eggs, milk and vanilla. Add cinnamon, nutmeg and sugar to egg mixture and whisk throughly.
  3. In a large skillet on medium heat melt a couple tablespoons of butter. While the butter is melting submerge each piece of toast into the egg mixture one at a time. Add as many slices that fit into the pan once butter is sizzling.
  4. Cook toast until nicely browned, peeking occasionally underneath to watch for burning. Once nicely browned flip toast and brown the other side. Repeat in batches until remaining toast is cooked.
  5. Serve hot with a dollop of butter, maple syrup and other toppings if desired.

Notes:

I use Sumano's Watsonville sliced sourdough round loaf. If you are using sandwich sliced sourdough you will likely not have enough egg mixture to cover eight full slices of bread. You can always double the recipe if needed to accommodate more bread. Further, sub any bread you like for this recipe!
